Joni Mitchell's Newport Folk Festival performance on Sunday is already legendary. The crowd shouted as the singer-songwriter took the stage for her first public concert since 2015.

After Mitchell's brain aneurysm, which left her unable to speak, move, or play guitar, many fans never dreamed this day would arrive again.In an interview with CBS News after the event, the 78-year-old singer talked of losing the ability to move and speak.

She called her latter years "a return to childhood."Mitchell relearned guitar by viewing herself on camera "to see where I put my fingers."

Sunday, she surprised festival-goers by playing a guitar solo during "Just Like This Train""It's amazing to be able to perform again," Wang told NPR. He said that brain surgeons use "return-to-work" to measure functional recovery. "But it's seldom nuanced."

The most life-threatening aneurysms occur when the weakening blood artery wall swells and ruptures due to pressure."That's a highly severe situation, and approximately half of those individuals die before they reach the hospital," Wang said. Wang said a rupture might induce paralysis, coma, aphasia, and convulsions.Mitchell's aneurysm type and rupture status are unknown. She was found unconscious at her house on March 31, 2015, and she's been discreet about what happened since. Wang said Mitchell's recuperation required great dedication.
